Storyline:
Miranda Otto returns to her role as the shieldmaiden Éowyn at the start of the movie. She is narrating that the events take place about two centuries before Bilbo Baggins gets his hands on Sauron’s ring. The powerful Helm Hammerhand and his sons Hama, Haleth, and Héra are leading the realm of Rohan through a period of decay. In an effort to bring their warring families together, Freka, the Dundelings’ leader, challenges Helm’s authority and suggests a marriage between his son Wulf and Héra. Héra, who is independent-minded and evocative of Miyazaki’s heroines like Nausicaä, rejects the proposal since she sees Wulf as just a friend and has no desire for royal authority.
